The 2-Minute Rule for Prayer

James Clear writes: "When you start a new habit, it should take less than two minutes to do." What if we applied that to prayer?

The behavioral science: Habits form through repetition, not duration. Your brain builds neural pathways based on frequency, not intensity. A 2-minute prayer done daily rewires your default mode faster than a 30-minute session done sporadically.

How it works: Instead of committing to a full prayer session (which feels heavy when you are tired), commit only to 2 minutes. Set a timer. Start talking to God. When the timer ends, you can stop guilt-free. Most days, you will keep going.

A 7-day experiment to try this week:

  1. Monday: Thank God for one specific thing (2 min)
  2. Tuesday: Pray for one person by name (2 min)
  3. Wednesday: Confess one thing honestly (2 min)
  4. Thursday: Ask for help with today (2 min)
  5. Friday: Sit in silence and listen (2 min)
  6. Saturday: Pray a Psalm out loud (2 min)
  7. Sunday: Freestyle (2 min)
