Grace Church holds a Meet & Greet for those who are newer to Grace Church on the 4th Sunday of each month following the service in CJ's coffee shop. It is a great opportunity to meet the staff and leadership of Grace Church and learn a little more about the church. It also gives us an opportunity to learn a little about you! The purpose of the Samaritan Fund is to help people in the church and in the community who are in need. The Deacon Team at Grace oversees this fund and prayerfully considers & facilitates all requests.

Our summer series is called Walking with Jesus. We are looking at the life and ministry of the Lord using a chronological approach which involves a study of the Harmony of the Gospels.
We are looking at phases #3 and #4 of the Lord's ministry. This is known as the Ministry Training and Outreach period lasting 6-9 months.
Jesus is equipping His close followers with the necessary knowledge, attitude, and skills to effectively bring people to faith and establish them as devoted disciples.

In His efforts to grow the disciples, the Lord used normal areas of life to train His team. We've referred to these as Ministry Experiences. The Lord demonstrated that people in our everyday world have needs and is modeling to His followers how to meet those needs and impact lives spiritually.
This morning we are going to use Luke 5:12-13 as our primary text.
Here we see the fourth Ministry Experience where the Lord shows His "boys" how to impact the life of someone who is marginalized.
Marginalized people are individuals or groups pushed to the outer edges of society as unimportant and having a lower status.
We see in verse 12 that this person "was covered with leprosy" and we would call them a leper.

12 While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell facedown and begged Him, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”
13 Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” He said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.

Leviticus chapters 13 & 14 provide information to help us understand the nature of leprosy. Biblical leprosy was a catchall term for a variety of serious and long-term skin diseases. Under biblical law, leprosy made a Jewish person both ritually and socially unclean. God was teaching His people that purity matters.
Those afflicted were forcibly removed to live in isolation outside the community. They were legally required to wear torn clothes, leave their hair unkempt, cover their faces and shout "unclean, unclean" to warn others away.
In the Bible, God did heal people of leprosy to reveal Himself and to teach a lesson. Also, there were times when a skin disease resolved itself.

As we continue looking at this training experience, we see that Jesus is preparing His team for a life of ministry - to make a spiritual difference in the lives of others.
Remember that when the Lord chose these people, He said, "I will make you" - the implication is that a spiritual transformation must take place and we must be trained.
