Our summer series is called Walking with Jesus. We are looking at the life and ministry of the Lord using a chronological approach which involves a study of the Harmony of the Gospels. It brings together the different Gospel accounts, sometimes using just one writer's perspective and other times combining multiple accounts to give us a more complete picture of what happened.
We've been looking at the 6-9 month period of Jesus' ministry known as the Ministry Experiences and Expeditions of Jesus and His followers.
Today we continue with another one of those ministry experiences.
Jesus was teaching them that ministry begins right where we are. They were also exposed to people from different backgrounds and cultures which prepared them for the greater mission they would carry out after His resurrection.

As we reflect on our own lives - have you ever been stuck in a rut? Like you're riding the same ferris wheel or merry-go-round; going round and round but never really getting anywhere? Maybe you feel like you have the same routines, the same challenges, the same struggles?
But what if we aren't actually stuck? What if God is preparing us? What if the ordinary things we keep doing, the challenges we keep facing, and the lessons we keep learning are actually God's way of preparing us for something greater?

Like Danny, our daily lives have been a training ground of successes and failures. We have been unknowingly preparing for something much larger. Jesus knows exactly how and what He needs us to be ready for. We just have to respond when He calls us. He did the same with Simon Peter in Luke 5.

1. God often begins with what we already have.

3. Jesus gives us a greater purpose.
Questions to ask yourself: Am I finding my identity more in what I do than in whose I am? Have I confused career success with God's purpose? How can I use my current job, gifts, or relationships to point people toward Christ?

4. Leave what is temporary to pursue what is eternal.

Just like Danny Larusso and Simon Peter, we have been training for the most important moment in our lives. The difference is simply this, when you are called will you respond? Will you allow Jesus to turn the simple task of “paint the fence” or “let down the nets” into something where you can experience the best he has to offer? It all starts with the word YES when he calls you to obey.
