Triggered: Who's Really in Control?

Dr. Conway Edwards · One Community Church

Adapted sermon summary. The complete original notes appear in the final PDF card.

Notice the response

The message distinguishes painful events from our response to them. Triggers activate unresolved wounds and old patterns; disproportionate reactions can sustain cycles of pain.

Identify what activates you

Notice your inner story, what provokes you quickly, which relationships activate you, and when reactions intensify. The five categories are emotions, relationships, environments, beliefs, and past wounds.

Look beneath insecurity

Insecurity can appear as defensiveness, jealousy, overcompensation, people-pleasing, control, rejection fears, resistance to correction, or constant attention-seeking.

Consider the consequences

Unmanaged triggers can obscure progress, harm allies, deepen spiritual vulnerability, reinforce lies, hurt those we lead, and pass pain onward. Read 1 Samuel 18:6–11.

Move toward healing

Acknowledge triggers, test them against truth, address underlying wounds, and cultivate emotional awareness. Manage temptation rather than denying it. The goal is to change your response, rather than eliminate every trigger.
