Our first character is found in the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 3. We read of a person known as OG.
OG was the king of Bashan and is named twenty-two times in the Bible across six different biblical books. By reading what God has chosen to reveal to us, we learn some very interesting things about him that we can apply to our own lives.

Background:
Moses is leading the Israelites from their Wilderness wanderings toward the Promised Land. God told Moses to by-pass the land of Edom and Moab and come to the eastern side of the Jordan River and prepare to enter the land of Caanan.
Two and a half of the 12 tribes of Israel decide they want to settle on the fertile grazing land on the east side of the Jordon River.
To get there --- we see in the previous chapter, (Deuteronomy 2:18-23) that the Israelites are walking on eggshells --- the portion of land that they cross over is just between Moab and Ammon and those people were Israel’s distant kin folk. Once they were positioned, the Israelites had to defeat the two main kingdoms occupying that fertile-grazing portion of land.
The first conquest of the two is found in Deuteronomy 2:24-25.
Once Israel defeated the Amorites in this area, they turned northward for the second kingdom they had to defeat which brings us to our text today.

Our text today is found in Deuteronomy 3:1-13. In it we learn about the conquest of Bashan and the division of the land to the 2 1/3 tribes of Israel who wanted to stay on the east side of the Jordan River.
In verse 11 we see one of the more interesting verses in the Bible.
OG is from a clan called the Rephaites. This group is one of the five clans of giants mentioned in the Bible. And besides these, there were a number of the Canaanite tribes who had a few individuals referred to as giants. The most famous of which, is a guy from the other side of the Jordan River called Goliath.
When you think of a giant, think of someone who is extremely large and strong, or very tall.

2 But the LORD said to me, “Do not fear him, for I have delivered him into your hand, along with all his people and his land. Do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.”
3 So the LORD our God also delivered Og king of Bashan and his whole army into our hands. We struck them down until no survivor was left.
4 At that time we captured all sixty of his cities. There was not a single city we failed to take—the entire region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
5 All these cities were fortified with high walls and gates and bars, and there were many more unwalled villages.
6 We devoted them to destruction, as we had done to Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children of every city.
7 But all the livestock and plunder of the cities we carried off for ourselves.
8 At that time we took from the two kings of the Amorites the land across the Jordan, from the Arnon Valley as far as Mount Hermon—
9 which the Sidonians call Sirion but the Amorites call Senir—
10 all the cities of the plateau, all of Gilead, and all of Bashan as far as the cities of Salecah and Edrei in the kingdom of Og.
11 (For only Og king of Bashan had remained of the remnant of the Rephaim. His bed of iron, nine cubits long and four cubits wide, is still in Rabbah of the Ammonites.)
12 So at that time we took possession of this land. To the Reubenites and Gadites I gave the land beyond Aroer along the Arnon Valley, and half the hill country of Gilead, along with its cities.
13 To the half-tribe of Manasseh I gave the rest of Gilead and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og. (The entire region of Argob, the whole territory of Bashan, used to be called the land of the Rephaim.)

Now back to OG...He was a member and leader of the Amorite tribe of people. When God made his covenant with Abraham, the Lord told him that his descendants would live in Egypt for four hundred years. The reason God explained, was because “the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.” The iniquity or sin of these people was an incredibly perverse level and practice of pride, idolatry, immorality, child sacrifice, and spiritism.
God timed the arrival of His judgment with the fullness of the sin to be judged. Not before. God did not jump the gun. He was, in fact, long suffering and endured the idolatry and sins of the nations for centuries while still providing for them. But there comes a time when the sins of a people are “complete.” That is the time for decisive judgment.
The appointed instrument of God’s judgment was the army of Israel. But God saw himself as the effective warrior behind the defeat of the Amorites.

God did the destroying. It was by the hand of Israel, but it was the judgment of God. The just purposes of God were being carried out, and he used Israel to do so.
