Title: “Offense”
Topic:The Benefits of Not Being Offended
Foundation texts:
Matthew 11:6
BSB
6 Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of Me. ”
BSB
Matthew 11:1-6
BSB
1 After Jesus had finished instructing His twelve disciples, He went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.
2 Meanwhile John heard in prison about the works of Christ, and he sent his disciples
3 to ask Him, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?”
4 Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see:
5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.
6 Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of Me. ”
BSB
INTRODUCTION:
Offense is one of the most subtle and destructive tools the enemy uses against believers. It doesn’t come loudly; it comes quietly, through misunderstandings, unmet expectations, hurt feelings, and perceived wrongs. In a culture where people are easily triggered and quick to withdraw, Jesus makes a powerful statement: “Blessed is he who is not offended…”That tells us something important:
a. Offense is common.
b. But freedom from offense is a blessing.

The Greek word for “offended” here is skandalizo. It means to be trapped, to stumble, or to fall away.
Sometimes people become offended because life did not turn out the way they thought it should. Think about this contrast in Scripture:

a. John the Baptist was imprisoned and eventually beheaded. Matthew 14. NKJV
b. Peter was imprisoned and supernaturally released by an angel. Acts 12:5-11 NKJV
c. Paul and Silas were imprisoned, worshipped God, and experienced an earthquake that opened the prison doors. Acts 16:25-34 NKJV
d. Paul worked at not being offended. Acts 24:16 AMPC
Offense often grows where understanding is absent. People become offended when:

a. God’s plan looks different than expected.
b. Someone else receives the breakthrough they prayed for.
c. Life seems unfair.

Offense is not just an emotion; it’s a trap.
POINT 1: NOT BEING OFFENDED PROTECTS YOUR HEART.
Proverbs 4:23
BSB
23 Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life.
BSB
When offense enters your heart, it contaminates everything:
a. Your perspective.
b. Your relationships.
c. Your spiritual sensitivity.
What offense does:
a. Turns small issues into major conflicts.
b. Distorts your interpretation of people’s intentions.
c. Builds walls instead of bridges.

Jesus warned:
Luke 17:1-3
BSB
1 Jesus said to His disciples, “It is inevitable that stumbling blocks will come, but woe to the one through whom they come!
2 It would be better for him to have a millstone hung around his neck and to be thrown into the sea than to cause one of these little ones to stumble.
3 Watch yourselves. If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.
BSB
*Notice, He didn’t say hold onto it, He said deal with it and release it.

Benefit:
When you refuse offense:
a. Your heart stays clean.
b. Your spirit stays sensitive.
c. Your peace remains intact.
POINT 2: NOT BEING OFFENDED PRESERVES RELATIONSHIPS.
Proverbs 18:19
BSB
19 An offended brother is harder to win than a fortified city, and disputes are like the bars of a castle.
BSB
*Offense builds emotional fortresses. Many broken relationships are not due to major betrayal, but minor offenses that were never resolved.

Reality:
a. People will misunderstand you.
b. People will disappoint you.
c. People will not always meet expectations.

Even Jesus faced offense:
Matthew 13:57
BSB
57 And they took offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown and in his own household is a prophet without honor.”
BSB
*If people got offended at Jesus, they will get offended at you.

Benefit:
When you choose not to be offended:
a. You maintain unity.
b. You keep doors open.
c. You allow God to heal relationships instead of burying them.
POINT 3: NOT BEING OFFENDED KEEPS YOU SPIRITUALLY MATURE.
Ephesians 4:14-15
BSB
14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed about by the waves and carried around by every wind of teaching and by the clever cunning of men in their deceitful scheming.
15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ Himself, who is the head.
BSB
Immaturity reacts.
Maturity responds.

Offended people are easily moved:
a. One comment can shift their attitude.
b. One disagreement can disconnect them.

But mature believers are stable:
Psalms 119:165
BSB
165 Abundant peace belongs to those who love Your instruction; nothing can make them stumble.
BSB
Nothing causes them to stumble.
Benefit:
a. Emotional stability.
b. Spiritual consistency.
c. Unshakable peace.
POINT 4: NOT BEING OFFENDED KEEPS YOU IN POSITION FOR BLESSING.
Proverbs 19:11
BSB
11 A man’s insight gives him patience, and his virtue is to overlook an offense.
BSB
Remember the key text: “Blessed is he who is not offended…”Offense can disconnect you from:
a. God’s voice
b. God’s people
c. God’s purpose

John the Baptist stumbled because of unmet expectations. Jesus responded with that statement, not as criticism, but as correction.
Truth:
Offense often comes when:
a. God doesn’t do what we expected.
b. People don’t respond how we hoped.

But faith says:
“I trust God even when I don’t understand.”
Benefit:
a. You stay aligned with God’s plan.
b. You remain positioned for a breakthrough.
c. You don’t miss what God is doing.
POINT 5: NOT BEING OFFENDED RELEASES FORGIVENESS AND FREEDOM.
Mark 11:25
BSB
25 And when you stand to pray, if you hold anything against another, forgive it, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your trespasses as well. ”
BSB
* Forgiveness is not optional; it’s essential.

Offense says: “They hurt me.
” Freedom says: “I release them.”

Important:
Forgiveness is not:
a. Saying what they did was right.
b. Ignoring the pain.
Forgiveness is:
a. Choosing freedom over bondage.

Benefit:
a. Emotional healing.
b. Spiritual authority in prayer.
c. Freedom from bitterness.
PRACTICAL APPLICATION:

How to live unoffended:

1. Expect imperfection
a. People are human.

2. Refuse to assume the worst.
a. Give grace, not suspicion.

3. Deal with issues quickly.
a. Don’t let offense grow.

4. Stay rooted in love.
a. 1 Corinthians 13:5 “Love is not easily provoked..”

5. Guard your perspective
a. Don’t rehearse hurt, renew your mind.
Closing Statement:
Don’t Allow Offense To Keep You From Walking In The Blessing!
