Mark 9:14-29
BSB
14 When they returned to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them.
15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were filled with awe and ran to greet Him.
16 “What are you disputing with them?” He asked.
17 Someone in the crowd replied, “Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a spirit that makes him mute.
18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked Your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable.”
19 “O unbelieving generation!” Jesus replied. “How long must I remain with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to Me.”
20 So they brought him, and seeing Jesus, the spirit immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.
21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has this been with him?” “From childhood,” he said.
22 “It often throws him into the fire or into the water, trying to kill him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”
23 “If You can?” echoed Jesus. “All things are possible to him who believes!”
24 Immediately the boy’s father cried out, “I do believe; help my unbelief!”
25 When Jesus saw that a crowd had come running, He rebuked the unclean spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” He said, “I command you to come out and never enter him again.”
26 After shrieking and convulsing him violently, the spirit came out. The boy became like a corpse, so that many said, “He is dead.”
27 But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to his feet, and he stood up.
28 After Jesus had gone into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”
29 Jesus answered, “This kind cannot come out, except by prayer.”
Matthew 17:14-23

14 When they came to the crowd, a man came up to Jesus and knelt before Him.
15 “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering terribly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.
16 I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not heal him.”
17 “O unbelieving and perverse generation!” Jesus replied. “How long must I remain with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy here to Me.”
18 Then Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment.
19 Afterward the disciples came to Jesus privately and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”
20 “Because you have so little faith,” He answered. “For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
22 When they gathered together in Galilee, Jesus told them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.
23 They will kill Him, and on the third day He will be raised to life.” And the disciples were deeply grieved.

37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, Jesus was met by a large crowd.
38 Suddenly a man in the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my only child.
39 A spirit keeps seizing him, and he screams abruptly. It throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It keeps mauling him and rarely departs from him.
40 I begged Your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable.”
41 “O unbelieving and perverse generation!” Jesus replied. “How long must I remain with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”
42 Even while the boy was approaching, the demon slammed him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.
43 And they were all astonished at the greatness of God. While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus was doing, He said to His disciples,

Repent

Repent for issues we’ve tolerated.

Help our unbelief

Grow our faith. Show us what unbelief looks, smells, and feels like.

  • Pray for stubborn issues.
  • Take authority over demonic opposition.

Pray for our children

  • Give us discernment concerning our homes.
  • Give us wisdom to lead our children.
James 1:5
BSB
5 Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

Give us the heart of the Father

The story of the prodigal son in Luke is really about the Father.

Prodigal describes someone given to extravagant expenditure: lavish or wasteful. As a noun, it describes a person who spends lavishly and without necessity. It can also carry the sense of being very liberal or lavishly bountiful.

The son’s behavior was prodigal: he was focused selfishly and spent lavishly on himself. But perhaps the father’s behavior was also prodigal: he spent recklessly and lavishly on his son without giving a thought to his son’s sin.

Luke 15:18-24
BSB
18 I will get up and go back to my father and say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.
19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.”’
20 So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.
21 The son declared, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
22 But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let us feast and celebrate.
24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again! He was lost and is found!’ So they began to celebrate.
