Daily Encounter Guide

Daily Encounters help us spiritually grow as disciples of Jesus. God invites us to meet with Him daily. Just as Israel gathered manna every morning, God teaches us to live in daily dependence, obedience, and intimacy with Him.

A disciple follows Jesus, obeys Him, and builds their life around Him every day. Discipleship is formed through repetition, obedience, intimacy, and trust, not information alone.

1. Set an appointment with God

Daily encounters begin with intention.

  • Choose a daily time.
  • Choose a daily place.
  • Remove distractions.
  • Expect resistance, and show up anyway.
  • Have an appointment with the Lord every day.

2. Welcome the Holy Spirit

Begin by inviting God’s presence. Pray:

  • “Holy Spirit, You are welcome here.”
  • “No spirit but the Holy Spirit is welcome.”
  • “Give me ears to hear.”
  • “Teach me.”
  • “Speak, Lord.”

3. Worship

Minister to God’s heart before asking for anything.

  • Play worship music.
  • Sing, speak, or sit in reverence.
  • Thank God for who He is.

4. Pray the Lord’s Prayer

Jesus gave us a daily prayer framework. Pray slowly and intentionally:

  • “Our Father in Heaven…” Declare God’s holiness.
  • “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done…” Surrender your will to His.
  • “Give us this day our daily bread…” Ask God for what you need today.
  • “Forgive us our debts…” Repent and receive grace.
  • “As we forgive our debtors…” Forgive people by name.
  • “Lead us not into temptation…” Ask for strength and protection.
  • “Deliver us from evil…” Declare victory in Christ.

5. Personal prayer list

Pray intentionally for yourself, your family, your friends, your workplace, your city, your church and leaders, and the peace of Jerusalem. Add your own prayer requests.

6. Read the Word: Daily Bread

God’s Word was meant to be encountered daily, not occasionally.

  • 15-minute plan: 1 Psalm, 1 Proverb, 1 Gospel.
  • 30-minute plan: 1 Psalm, 1 Proverb, 1 Gospel, 1 Old Testament, 1 New Testament, 1 Revelation.

7. Give God room to speak

Slow down. Listen. Pray: “Speak, Lord. Your servant is listening.”

  • Be still.
  • Write down what you sense.
  • Pay attention to Scripture, impressions, or the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

8. Ask Him to teach you His ways

God desires to form you, not just inform you. Pray:

  • “Teach me Your ways.”
  • “I want what You want, show me what You want.”

Repeat what God says out loud. Obey what He reveals.

9. Close with the Prayer of Encounters

Psalms 110:4
BSB
4 The LORD has sworn and will not change His mind: “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”
Psalms 122:6
BSB
6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May those who love you prosper.

What to Expect

The goal of this guide is to help you learn about spiritual warfare and how to engage in it. This guide will help you:

  • Recognize spiritual warfare in everyday life.
  • Have a biblical understanding of spiritual warfare.
  • Learn to discern and respond with wisdom.
  • Engage in spiritual warfare biblically and practically.
  • Understand terms and concepts around spiritual warfare.

Spiritual warfare does not have to be intimidating or complicated. As you go through this guide, ask the Lord to speak to you through it.

What Is Spiritual Warfare?

The spiritual war over who rules the will of man.

Spiritual warfare is the clash of two kingdoms: real conflict between the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness. It is a battle over the souls of people.

The Bible makes it clear that we have a real enemy who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy. Spiritual forces are in opposition to the purposes of God.

People are not the enemy. The devil is the enemy.

Exodus 3:5
BSB
5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
Matthew 14:24-33
BSB
24 but the boat was already far from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25 During the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went out to them, walking on the sea.
26 When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus spoke up at once: “Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.”
28 “Lord, if it is You,” Peter replied, “command me to come to You on the water.”
29 “Come,” said Jesus. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus.
30 But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and took hold of Peter. “You of little faith,” He said, “why did you doubt?”
32 And when they had climbed back into the boat, the wind died down.
33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God!”
Ephesians 3:20
BSB
20 Now to Him who is able to do so much more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us,
Colossians 2:15
BSB
15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
Mark 16:17

17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;
Matthew 12:43-45
BSB
43 When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it passes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it.
44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ On its return, it finds the house vacant, swept clean, and put in order.
45 Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and dwell there; and the final plight of that man is worse than the first. So will it be with this wicked generation.”
Revelation 12:11
BSB
11 They have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. And they did not love their lives so as to shy away from death.
Matthew 3:8
BSB
8 Produce fruit, then, in keeping with repentance.
Revelation 2:4-5
BSB
4 But I have this against you: You have abandoned your first love.
5 Therefore, keep in mind how far you have fallen. Repent and perform the deeds you did at first. But if you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.
1 Corinthians 12:1-11
BSB
1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.
2 You know that when you were pagans, you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.
3 Therefore I inform you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
4 There are different gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 There are different ministries, but the same Lord.
6 There are different ways of working, but the same God works all things in all people.
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by the same Spirit,
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,
10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in various tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, who apportions them to each one as He determines.
Luke 11:13
BSB
13 So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
2 Suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
6 And when this sound rang out, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking his own language.
7 Astounded and amazed, they asked, “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans?
8 How is it then that each of us hears them in his own native language?
9 Parthians, Medes, and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome,
11 both Jews and converts to Judaism; Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”
12 Astounded and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
13 But others mocked them and said, “They are drunk on new wine!”
14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, lifted up his voice, and addressed the crowd: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen carefully to my words.
15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It is only the third hour of the day!
16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 ‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on My menservants and maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

Habakkuk 3:17-18
BSB
17 Though the fig tree does not bud and no fruit is on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though the sheep are cut off from the fold and no cattle are in the stalls,

Acts 16:25-26

Key concepts

  • The spiritual realm is real.
  • People are not your enemy.
  • You have a real enemy.
  • Fight from the victory Jesus already won.
  • Not everything is a demon, but demons are real.
  • Your weapons are spiritual.
  • You have authority in Christ.
  • The goal is to advance the Kingdom of God.

Exposing the Enemy’s Tactics

Confusion

The enemy knows that if he can keep you confused, he can keep you from moving forward. God brings clarity. The enemy brings confusion.

Resistance

Spiritual opposition to the will of God in your life. Many times resistance reveals that your obedience to God is a threat to the enemy.

Isolation

The enemy wants you alone. Spiritual covering is provided through community in a local church. When isolated, you are more vulnerable to spiritual attacks.

Accusation

The enemy is called the accuser. He wants you trapped in cycles of shame, self-hatred, regret, and hopelessness to pull you away from God. The conviction of the Holy Spirit draws you near to God.

Temptation

Temptation is not sin, but leads to sin if acted upon. The enemy looks for moments when you are exhausted, lonely, disappointed, offended, and vulnerable.

Division

The enemy loves division because unity carries power. If the enemy cannot destroy you individually, he will often attempt to divide you relationally.

Fear

Fear is a spirit. The enemy wants to intimidate you to keep you from obeying God. The enemy does not always need to destroy your calling if he can convince you never to walk in it.

Distraction

Distraction pulls you away from what God has called you to do so that you are ineffective. The best way to keep you from God’s will is to draw your attention elsewhere.

Shame

Shame separates you from intimacy with God. The enemy fears a believer who knows how to get into the presence of God and stay there.

Deception

The enemy wants you to question everything that is true. What is true is what God says and what is written in the Word.

Types of Spiritual Warfare

Fear-based warfare

Fear-based warfare is when you fear God more than any other spirit.

The fear of God produces holiness, obedience, discernment, and surrender, all of which shut doors to compromise with darkness.

  • Hebrew: yirʾah. Fear, reverence, awe, holy trembling; deep respect before God.
  • Greek: phobos. Fear, reverence, awe; depending on context, holy fear before God.

Joy-based warfare

Joy-based warfare is when you rely on the joy of the Lord as your strength no matter the circumstances.

  • Hebrew: chedvah. Joy, gladness, rejoicing.
  • Greek: chara. Joy, gladness, deep delight; joy rooted in grace and God’s presence.
Proverbs 9:10
BSB
10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
2 Corinthians 7:1
BSB
1 Therefore, beloved, since we have these promises, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that defiles body and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Nehemiah 8:10
BSB
10 Then Nehemiah told them, “Go and eat what is rich, drink what is sweet, and send out portions to those who have nothing prepared, since today is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
Philippians 4:4
BSB
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

Honor-based warfare

Honor-based warfare assigns Heaven’s value in all circumstances, whether people or principalities.

  • Hebrew: kavod. Glory, honor, weight, significance, value.
  • Greek: timē. Honor, value, respect, preciousness; to recognize worth.

Humility-based warfare

Humility-based warfare recognizes that authority flows from submission to God, not spiritual pride, performance, or self-importance.

  • Hebrew: ʿanavah. Humility, meekness, lowliness, gentleness.
  • Greek: tapeinophrosynē. Humility, lowliness of mind, a humble view of oneself.
1 Samuel 2:30
BSB
30 Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I did indeed say that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever. But now the LORD declares: Far be it from Me! For I will honor those who honor Me, but those who despise Me will be disdained.
Proverbs 22:4
BSB
4 The rewards of humility and the fear of the LORD are wealth and honor and life.
Romans 12:10
BSB
10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Outdo yourselves in honoring one another.
James 4:6-7
BSB
6 But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

How to Fight

Get in the presence of God

Spend intentional time worshiping, praying, and listening to the Lord before reacting to what you are feeling.

James 4:8
BSB
8 Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Discern what is happening

Pause before labeling the situation. Pray, examine the fruit, compare with Scripture, and seek wise counsel when needed.

1 John 4:1
BSB
1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Read the Word of God

Write the lie down. Find Scripture that directly confronts it. Meditate on it until your mind comes back into agreement with God.

John 8:32
BSB
32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Put on the armor of God

Ask yourself which area is under attack. Then intentionally strengthen that area with Scripture and obedience.

Ephesians 6:10-18
BSB
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.
11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes.
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
13 Therefore take up the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you will be able to stand your ground, and having done everything, to stand.
14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness arrayed,
15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace.
16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
17 And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer and petition. To this end, stay alert with all perseverance in your prayers for all the saints.

Fast and pray

Identify a fast. Replace the time you would normally spend on what you are fasting from with prayer, Scripture, worship, and listening to God.

Isaiah 58:6
BSB
6 Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen: to break the chains of wickedness, to untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and tear off every yoke?
2 Corinthians 10:4-6
BSB
4 The weapons of our warfare are not the weapons of the world. Instead, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.
5 We tear down arguments and every presumption set up against the knowledge of God; and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
6 And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, as soon as your obedience is complete.

Prayer of Reformation

Lord, I ask for You to reform any crooked ways within me. I seek Heaven’s blueprint and ask for Your heart and Your mind in all things.

I pray less of me and more of You! I want what You want. Show me what pleases You. Let Your will be done!

If I perish, I perish, but I will make straight the way of the Lord. Lord, You are holy, make me holy!

I pray for revival and reformation in my family, city, state, America, and the nations! Amen.
