A Christian Case for Walking Outside Every Day

God walked in the garden in the cool of the day. Moses met God on a mountain. Elijah heard the still small voice outside a cave. Jesus went to lonely places to pray. The pattern is hard to miss: God meets people outdoors.

The research: A 2019 study in Scientific Reports found that spending at least 120 minutes per week in nature is associated with significantly better health and well-being. That is roughly 17 minutes a day. A Stanford study showed that walking in nature reduces activity in the subgenual prefrontal cortex, the brain region associated with rumination and repetitive negative thinking.

What walking does for your body:

  • Lowers cortisol (stress hormone) within 20 minutes
  • Improves cardiovascular health with zero equipment
  • Boosts vitamin D production from sunlight
  • Regulates circadian rhythm, improving sleep quality
  • Reduces blood pressure more effectively than indoor exercise alone

What walking does for your soul: There is something about moving your body through creation that opens a channel for prayer. The rhythm of footsteps becomes a kind of meditation. The sky reminds you of scale. The breeze reminds you of breath. You do not need a devotional app. You need a pair of shoes and a door.

A 7-day walking challenge: This week, walk outside for at least 15 minutes every day. No earbuds for at least half of it. Pay attention. Talk to God like He is walking beside you. Because according to Genesis, that is exactly what He likes to do.
